I cringe at many of these shows while watching over my daughter's shoulder. I am saddened and sometimes a bit distraught that my child is so taken by these shows, the characters and their attitudes. And while I would like to blame Disney for the cultural form and the cultural norms described, I think it is valuable for me to remember that the "parent-free" kids show dates back almost 100 years to Hal Roach's "Our Gang" (Little Rascals) from the 1920's. I also think that, like pop music, each generation will produce shows that the parents will consider too ribald for their children. I agree with others that it is our responsibility to process this cultural phenomena with our kids, but I find that my own tone can be either as snarky as theirs (which is particularly problematic when my concern is with the snarky attitudes I fear my daughter gets from the shows), or as smarmy as I recall my parents having been with me on such issues.
