Roger Ebert, who died in April, was best known for his thumbs-up/thumbs-down film reviews alongside fellow TV critic Gene Siskel. But Ebert also wrote the screenplay to sexploitation king Russ Meyer’s X-rated Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), a near-plotless, sort-of sequel to 1967’s Valley of the Dolls, filled with rocker chicks, stoners, freaks, wall-to-wall bare breasts and enough pansexual romps to rival Bob Guccione’s Caligula. And who can forget dialogue like, “You will drink the black sperm of my vengeance”? Co-presented by Cinefamily and Cinespia, tonight’s Tribute to Roger Ebert, hosted by his widow, Chaz Ebert, includes an archival 35mm print screening of the camp classic, as well as clips from Siskel and Ebert’s TV show and a 1978 interview with Ebert and Meyer; plus appearances by film composer Stu Phillips and living Doll Erica Gavin, the movie’s hot lesbian, who unfortunately gets her brains blown out.
