Across slightly more than a half-hour of inhabiting characters from a centaur to a Native American activist to the lady Eve, Emily Maya Mills clambers up ecclesiastical scaffolding and unleashes her one-woman show, "God Hates Figs," upon an unsuspecting world -- a world she never made. Directed by Julie Brister, Mills' take on existence is less a series of chortlesome one-liners than a sagacious autopsy of the frailties and foibles of life. It's both sad and true, an approach that speaks truth to power without pandering to the typical comedy tropes of "What else is in the news?" or misery for misery's sake. This is modern comedy at its most transcendent, casting illumination onto the shadows from the radiance of the wise-yet-somehow-sunny Ms. Mills, who has done 60-plus UCB shows. UCB Theater, 5919 Franklin Ave., Hlywd.; Tues., June 11, 9:30 p.m.; $5. (323) 908-8702, losangeles.ucbtheatre.com.
