Lie Down I Think I Love You is U.K. artist Charming Baker's first solo show in L.A. in a few years -- a lamentable absence indeed, considering the critical and popular acclaim that attended his last West Coast foray. But it's not like he's been on vacation. There was the 2010 solo show in New York that famously sold out thanks to Damien Hirst buying the entire show in one go, followed by some for-the-Queen hometown glory in a collaboration with designer Paul Smith in 2012. But success hasn't changed Baker much, unless it's to make him even more confident and ambitious in preparing for his L.A. return. His anticipated new show, installed in the luxuriously appointed production and exhibition facilities of Hollywood's Milk Studios, features a series of 20 paintings and several new prints in his trademark style of combining vintage and antique patterns with evocative, painterly human-animal hybrid portraiture, expressing archetypal personalities and the experiences of being human and in love. For this show, he'll also exhibit individual sculptures and a central large-scale sculptural installation -- the totality of the effort being the largest presentation of his career to date, and something of a watershed moment for both the artist and his fans. The opening night Thursday was invitation-only, and the show itself only lasts through Sunday, so hurry up already and join the crowd of street-art kids and poshly accented ex-pats heading to Hollywood to see what all the fuss is about.
