Ah, death. Socrates called it "the greatest of all human blessings," while J.M. Barrie asked, "Why fear death? It's the greatest adventure of all." Climbing aboard that grim choo-choo train of thought is always a gasser, and when Cinefamily rolls out The ABCs of Death, expect an overstimulating, offensive and ghastly thrill fest. The film was compiled by New Zealand archivist/programmer Ant Timpson and Tim League of Drafthouse Films, who gave 26 genre filmmakers each a letter of the alphabet and an assignment to depict a death on screen. The resulting celebration of morbidity, which premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, is presented in a schoolkid's A-is-for-Apple primer format, only in this case, we're guessing that A is for Asphyxia. Segment directors Marcel Sarmiento ("D Is for Dogfight") and Jon Schnepp ("W Is for WTF?") will be available for a post-mortem Q&A. The evening is sure to be a lovely, bloody antidote to stifling civility and social niceties. Get in line, let go and get primitive. Silent Movie Theater, 611 N. Fairfax Ave.; Fri., March 8, mid.; $12, members free. (323) 655-2510, cinefamily.org.
