Savoy Kitchen: 99 Essential Restaurants 2013

San Gabriel Valley doesn't lack for Hong Kong–style café fare, but few restaurants bridge generation gaps as well as Savoy Kitchen. You might find a group raised on YouTube next to a table of retirees, both parties waiting patiently for the Hainan chicken rice platter. The hallmark here is no-nonsense versions of beloved specialties with roots on the island of Hainan, just off the southern coast of China, and throughout Southeast Asia. A trio of sauces — ginger, chili and soy — accompanies each order of chicken, slow-cooked in stock with a similarly perfumed side of rice. Located just a block from the intersection of Garfield and Valley, this cash-only bistro has been a constant amidst frequent neighborhood turnover. Unlike the labyrinthine menus of Garden Café or Tasty Choice, Savoy keeps its selections trim (although, oddly, a handful of Italian-style pastas and pizzas make the list). The only real rival in popularity to the rice platter is the Malaysian beef brisket curry. 138 E. Valley Blvd., Alhambra; (626) 308-9535. Mon.-Sat., 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Entrees $6.75-$12.50.
