In the lurid pantheon of Tinseltown demonology, very few can begin to approach the infernally revered altitude, which Maila Nurmi, aka Vampira, achieved. Tonight's "V Is for Vampira" celebrates the strikingly visaged TV personality/actor/horror goddess, who set the cultural tone for postwar America's oddball monster movie fetish as hostess of her own mid-1950s Vampira Show on KABC and, long after her far-too-soon retirement, continued to win the black hearts of local sickos until her untimely 2008 death. She was befriended by the likes of James Dean and Liberace, and immortalized in the Ed Wood stinker Plan 9 From Outer Space. This Vampira-venerating event, which showcases a collection of her own artwork, memorabilia and artifacts -- in addition to an exhibition of Nurmi-inspired homages and a new line of official merch, lovingly created by a gaggle of like-minded horror-mad miscreants -- is certain to both chill and thrill.
