Anyone who's seen the excellent 2004 Klaus Nomi documentary, The Nomi Song, knows that Ann Magnuson, Kristian Hoffman and Joey Arias were the opera-singing alien's earliest collaborators. And all have gone on to far-reaching careers of their own: Magnuson as an actress and doyenne of cabaret; Hoffman as founder of the Mumps and also the songwriter on Nomi's two albums; and Arias, a one-time L.A. resident, who went from a Fiorucci store model in New York in the '70s to a performance artist in his own right. (Perhaps the crowning achievement for both Nomi and Arias was getting to sing backup for David Bowie on Saturday Night Live in 1979. And not the least surprising was Arias' role as emcee of Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity for six years.) With Arias at the mic and Hoffman at the piano, these shows — fittingly named "Lighting Strikes" after one of Nomi's covers — will be the first collaboration between the two. Arias will not only sing Nomi tracks but channel Billie Holiday and throw into the mix some '70s rock, popular standards and original music.
