Derby Girls Save the World

When you think of the hot and sweaty smashfest action show that is the Angel City Derby Girls, a benefit art auction probably isn't the first thing that springs to mind — but maybe it should be. Now in its sixth year and with a brand-new twist, Eat Your Art Out returns to transform Hollywood's Titmouse Studios into an urban art wonderland and drive-in movie party with a monster theme and a charitable heart. Flat-track roller derby is expensive, and this annual art-auction fundraiser is crucial to keeping the ladies, um, on track. But the Derby Girls aren't selfish. This year, in addition to the scores of first-rate works of art donated by local and international artists including Jim Mahfood, Kellesimone Waits, Allison Torneros, Chor Boogie, Dave Pressler and Eric Joyner, the event partners with the good people of the Keep Abreast Foundation, with artists painting 10 of the Angels' torso casts. Proceeds from those sales go directly the foundation's anticancer efforts. This one-two good-works punch is augmented by a coterie of food trucks, open bars, DJ sets, photo booths, B movies and general mayhem. Artists have been murdering walls all month in preparation, but all you have to do to help these queens of the stylish smackdown in their quest to take down cancer and the competition is show up ready to party — OK, and buy some art, too. Titmouse Studios, 1121 Seward St., Hlywd.; Sat., Feb. 23, 7 p.m.-mid.; $5. facebook.com/EYAOACDG.
Sat., Feb. 23, 7 p.m., 2013
