While you're updating this and tweeting that, zine authors are busy making actual creations in their messy living rooms, proving that even in the Internet age, there's still plenty to be gleaned from paper. This weekend, you can buy comics, stories, graphic and erotic art and all other manner of nonsensical ramblings and doodles straight from the artists' hands at the second annual L.A. Zine Fest. The event will feature wall-to-wall zinesters and small-press publishers with fantastical names: Blond Cunt, Cheer the Eff Up, Drippy Bone Books, Martin the Satanic Raccoon and Pimpkillah Productions. Last year's highlight featured Henry Rollins conducting an interview with V. Vale (writer, publisher and former member of psych–hard rock band Blue Cheer). This year, the fest will have two satellite locations — art gallery/vinyl store HRLDRY and the Moth Theater, both on Melrose — offering readings, workshops and discussions, including a panel with Allison Wolfe of the band Bratmobile, punk-rock icon Alice Bag, musician-filmmaker Drew Denny and actress-comic Charlyne Yi. If you like music with your periodicals, Footsie's in Cypress Park hosts a pre-fest night on Saturday, offering more readings and live bands playing everything from art punk to black metal.
