More About

There's a reason that producers who arrange world music cavalcades insistently return to the ancient Japanese art of Kodo: It is pure spectacle, grand and booming and visceral, shot through with an essence of spirituality that can only be triggered by giant drums and a sympathetic solar plexus. Tonight's Kodo One Earth Tour 2013: Legend demonstrates the two-fold meaning of the word "Kodo": heartbeat, and "children of the drum." This also means that simplicity is essential, much as children create art or music. For more than 30 years, this Kodo troupe has taken that simplicity — albeit in an illustrious, forceful way — and explored the limitless possibilities of 2,500 years' worth of taiko drums. You'd think something so basic would inherently be limited — not so. After three decades, the sonic webs they weave stretch ever-outward in increasingly compelling patterns, mesmerizing those awestruck lucky humans witnessing this event of a lifetime.
