Who's Smarmy Now?

Thursday, Dec 6 2012
Think Dylan Moran will be in the Christmas spirit? Bollocks. Seeing a dark, moody British lush with disheveled hair and a smarmy answer for everything might be perfect for anyone coping with the holiday blues. For Anglophiles, Moran is the star and co-writer of the BAFTA-winning comedy Black Books, featuring fellow comic/musician Bill Bailey (also of Never Mind the Buzzcocks). To the rest of America, the Irish actor living in Scotland ("the country where they fry the food five times to make sure it's dead") is best remembered as Simon Pegg's best friend in the David Schwimmer-directed Run, Fat Boy, Run and Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead before that. Moran is also a stand-up known for his slurred but wry ramblings about life's major subjects — politics, parenthood, aging. And no Irishman can stay away from religion, especially Moran, who's likened it to a "formalized panic about death": "Look at the Catholic Church, the campiest religion on the planet, with the purple robes, gold bits on the side and jewelry so big that if they let it fall, it will kill people." Moran's current tour is called "Yeah, Yeah," and the last time he appeared at Largo (the home-away-from-home for dark, moody British lushes) was in 2010. Since then, we've killed Osama and kept Obama in the White House. Surely he'll have something nice to say about America. Largo at the Coronet, 366 N. La Cienega Blvd.; Tues.-Wed., Dec. 11-12, 8 p.m.; $30. (310) 855-0350, largo-la.com.
