In the years since she's become the senior "It" girl, Betty White has written two books: 2010's Here We Go Again: My Life in Television and 2011's If You Ask Me: (And Of Course You Won't). In her current book, Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo, White forgoes sharing the spotlight with her celeb pals from her 60-plus-years in showbiz in favor of friends of the four-legged kind. A "confirmed zoophile," White talks about her lifelong love and commitment to animals dating back to the first time she visited the zoo as a kid in Chicago. In her book, White chronicles her decades-plus relationship with the Los Angeles Zoo; she used to visit the grounds even before the zoo opened to the public in 1966 and was later voted a trustee of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association. (You might recall seeing White and fellow animal lover and Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash in a couple of recent commercials for the zoo, or the celebs-and-pets talk show called The Pet Set that she hosted in the early '70s). White also writes about her ongoing work with the zoo's exhibits and dedicates chapters to some of her favorite residents, past and present, from Andalas the Sumatran rhinoceros to Gita the Asian elephant. If you missed seeing the sitcom legend last Thursday at Universal Studios as she accepted the "Who-Manitarian of the Year" award, don't forget to show up with your own four-legged friend as White signs her book at Barnes & Noble at the Grove at Farmers Market, 189 The Grove Drive; Mon., Dec. 10, 7 p.m.; free, book is $16.
