The Meth-Gay Sex Nightmare

Daniel Robison barely escaped the deadly addiction

Because of the overblown sense of confidence created by the drug, Reback says that outpatient treatments at the Friends Research Institute focus on providing patients with behavioral methods to engage socially and sexually — without relying upon methamphetamines.

"Sometimes their sexual identity is so tied to their meth use that we focus on treatments to reframe that mindset," she says.

Robison finally had had enough and walked away from his addiction seven years ago after his partner was arrested for selling the drug. While he says he doesn't miss being high, he does, at times, miss the sexual aspect.

"Before I started using, I never had good sex," Robison says. "Now I don't even know how to have sex like I did when I was high. I'm afraid of it, a little bit."

Rather than overcoming discomfort toward sex on his own, the drug did the work for him, he says.

He has been celibate for the seven years he's been clean. He's not opposed to the idea of having sex again, but now he's "being patient about it," and he wants to have a quality relationship first.

Instead, he concentrates on staying healthy through a strict diet, getting ample sleep and following his medication regimen.

In 2007, Robison took another major step forward. He began volunteering at Being Alive, a peer-driven agency on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, which specializes in supportive services for people living with HIV/AIDS, because he "wanted to do something."

In 2011, Robison was hired as a programs manager at Being Alive.

Now, every day, he consults with people similar to himself — HIV-positive men who may or may not be using crystal meth — to get them access to proper health care, food and housing. He feels that, after a life of so much chaos, he's finally found his purpose.

"Every day I get up and go to work, I think 'I'm still alive,' " Robison says. "I can't believe it.'

"I'm totally healthy right now," he says. "Thank you, universe."

The PNP Meth scene is also huge in San Diego. Many who have been positive for years throw sex parties fueled by Meth & seek out new people to join in on their orgies. Almost always Bare-Backing is required helping to multiple the explosive infection rate in the gay community. I use my self & I am lucky that I remain Negative but my use is now sporadic. I went from near daily use to maybe using ever other month if that. Unfortunately I can't say that about many people I know dozens  who are now HIV + Positive . Every Day a new person is infected. Its not just the drug but its the mind set of the person's willingness to either protect them self's or put them self in a risky situation. If your not willing to go Bare Back you can be excluded from the *Cliquish Meth Scene*. Most people who I know personally that use Meth on a regular are either positive or don't know their status. Its a very scary subculture. I am mostly into j/o to porn & non-penetrative sex namely oral & I believe that has truly helped me to avoid HIV infection, but it has also put me at odds with many other "tweakers" who enjoy Raw sex...Which is fine by me as my health is far more important then temporary fun that could shorten my life... Meth is bad enough on your health & HIV would just compound those effects further. Those of you out there who may use still please try to play it safe or at least practice less riskier acts such as J/O Oral ect...Another thing I noticed as well is Bottoms are more impacted by HIV for obvious reasons. If you're the receptive partner its your duty to use protection.

Thanks I wish you all the best, I mean no offense to anyone I am just being candid with my personal experience .I don't need judgement from anyone..."Judge not least you be judged"

I think this is the most selfish article I have ever read all this about how YOU survived

Did you infect anyone ?

Do you know how many people you infected?

@Candace76 Thank you for pointing out how selfish it was for me to share my personal story which was actually a very easy thing for me to do as I felt that until people stand up and say "hey! this is what can happen to you but you CAN get through it" then there will always be stigma and silence and the epidemic goes on. Yes, I probably did infect someone and I don't know how many...that is the point of the story. Meth=bad choices.

Daniel, I am so honored to have you as a friend! You do amazing work in West Hollywood, working with HIV positive people, creating Transitions, with it's unique butterfly symbol, a weekly group for transgender and poz, WAYYYY before the Gay and Lesbian Center stole your idea, and graphics, and now the LA Weekly story. HIV in Los Angeles is still such a negative.  Why? Forget your attitude and perception of what poz was. Drug companies and the gay community at large, have turned HIV into a manageable disease, and the City of West Hollywood is a great example of speaking up politically, grassroots help and outreach, and people like Daniel, old skool poz, with the new school, are looking with open arms to be the first city in the US to blast away the statistics, the secret world of crystal meth and gay/ bi/straight/trans sex and put it clearly on the table for all to see!

Happy Thanksgiving to LA Weekly, the entire Los Angeles Poz Community, and it's caregivers, Being Alive, Positive Images, APLA Dental Clinic, Project Angel Food, and props to Saban Free Clinic, UCLA and USC!

Thank You and Keep it up!!!

Big hugs to everyone

Sean Martin

So basically I think what everyone is trying to say without judging you first (John 8:7)... is that we are all so happy that you have repented (Luke 13:3b)  that horrible lonely and life ending path and done the Lords work missioning to others about the consequences of this lifestyle before they start. You are a true Christian in my eyes and Jesus would have been proud that you turned from the sin and healed your body and heart so that you could make it your lifes work to save others who do not teach their children about the great gift of sexuality that God has given us. And they do not educate them of the consequences of not being responsible in their actions and by the way they have made it clear that they dont want schools to teach them either so that leaves YOU DANIEL. Thank you for your painful truth and honesty. It has freed you from your sin by confessing your story to us..... AND AS FOR YOU jcrisw3453. HOW DARE YOU JUDGE THIS PERSON for finding his way out of this painful test that Daniel has survived. How completely un LOVING of you violating many many rules of GOD in one paragraph.WWJD?

Wow. You have to stay doped up to feel good about yourself? Doesn't sound like much of a life. You know why? Because God did not make you to live that way. Homosexuality is sin. You won't change that any time soon. Paul says in Romans 1 that God rejects people who reject Him. That's why you feel so bad about yourself. You're not right with the God who made you. Admit you're wrong and you'll feel much better. Repent of your sin and God will accept you into his family. Jesus warned that life is short but eternity lasts forever. Follow Christ now on the narrow road to heaven.

@jcrisw3453 That happens even outside of the gay community.  What rock are you living under?  Depression, low self-esteem, peer-pressure, dysfunctional family relations, etc... anything can lead one to try or get hooked on any recreational drug, prescription drug, alcoholic beverage, cigarettes, etc.  And look at all those sex offenders that are in your churches; all those "conservative, family values" politicos who are adulterers.  Yeah, your God and Jesus have abandoned millions of people here, not just those who become addicted to drugs, but those who are living in poverty and in starvation....

People make awful choices but even still Jesus saves them from the shame and guilt that come with sin. Open your Bible and start reading. God will speak to you. Try Matthew first. God is merciful but he's also entirely just and holy. This life is just a preparation for what comes next. Jesus said rewards are an all or nothing proposition. You either get rich in heaven or torture in hell. It's up to you to make the right choice.

WAIT , he's wondering how he survived ? What a JACKASS going around and infecting others KNOWING he was HIV positive ! He should be prosecuted !

@harrymurkin if you are ignorant or naive enough to believe someone when they tell you that they are hiv negative (the seroconversion process might be active even though you've technically tested free of the virus just last week), then you are partially responsible for leaving yourself open to infection. when two people have sex EACH person is basically culpable for what they "bring to the table" (more likely BED). blame is shared by each participant.

Experts are quick to point out that heterosexual people abuse meth as well, but HIV's transmission rate is significantly lower in the straight population because HIV is so much less prevalent there to begin with -

Really...well let's ignore the reality that while gay men are high on meth and in a sex club, many have the opinion if the random and anonymous sex partner does not ASK about HIV status, they have no BURDEN to reveal the fact they are HIV positive.

How can anyone rationalize that?

slygator

@Sedonasherpa you are absolutely right - and our choices have dire consequences sometimes. in a perfect world hiv status wouldn't have to be confidential between the individual and the state department of health or family doctor
