Mike Gatto's Blogger Problem

The Assembly District 43 incumbent faces opponent Greg Krikorian, but a worse opponent is Mayor Sam

On the surface, Assembly District 43 legislator Mike Gatto is everything an up-and-coming California pol should be: young, polite, handsome, slightly wonky and not on the fringe. So it is something of a surprise that Gatto has incurred the enmity of a small cadre of bloggers, gonzo journalists and gadflies.

Garen Yegparian, a columnist for Asbarez, a bilingual Armenian online newspaper, described him in print as "probably the most reprehensible person to have walked the halls of the California Legislature in many years." Peter Musurlian, a sort of poor man's Michael Moore, calls Gatto a "thug" and a "bully." And Scott Johnson, a blogger for Mayor Sam's Sister City, has dubbed Gatto the "Infant Assemblyman."

"He acts like an immature brat," says Johnson, an L.A. City Parks & Recreation employee.

Last year, State Controller John Chiang told state legislators they wouldn't be paid because they hadn't passed a balanced budget, as mandated by Proposition 25. Gatto issued a press release criticizing Chiang, saying, "I now have to explain to my wife and daughter that we won't be able to pay the bills because a politician chose to grandstand at our expense."

So KFI radio hosts John and Ken started a canned food drive for Gatto's family.

Gatto, who just turned 38, is a former staffer of Congressman Brad Sherman's — and Sherman is "enough to drive anyone crazy," in the words of one insider. "I've already apologized for how I've said things," Gatto says today.

Underlying all this angst toward Gatto is the fact that some see Assembly District 43, which covers heavily Armenian Glendale, as an "ethnic seat" for Armenians — a touchy subject that few discuss. Gatto is plain vanilla mixed with Italian.

A lawyer, Gatto won the 2010 special election for the Assembly seat vacated by Paul Krekorian, an Armenian-American who left his elected seat early — to run for the far better-paying Los Angeles City Council.

Gatto, one of only a handful of political moderates in the sharply divided, 120-member Legislature, then had to run again months later in order to hang onto his new seat during the normal election cycle.

That's when Mayor Sam blogger Johnson was handed some "opposition research" into Gatto by one of his political opponents, which Johnson posted on Mayor Sam, a provocative if rough-around-the-edges blog owned by Michael Higby.

The posts relied mostly on rumor and innuendo. Gatto responded in an unusual way, for a politician: He had his lawyer send Higby a cease-and-desist letter, calling Johnson's posts "unprovoked, unsubstantiated and libelous."

One of the posts turned out, in fact, to be just that, falsely claiming that Mike Gatto had been evicted from his apartment in Westwood. That research was about a different Mike Gatto, and Higby had to issue an embarrassing correction. To be safe, he removed every post slamming Gatto, partly because Higby feared the cost of a lawsuit and partly because of "pretty heavy-duty harassment on their side" — a barrage of phone calls and emails from Gatto's team, and the creation of a website by a Gatto supporter that personally insults Higby.

"We pulled some stuff we probably didn't need to pull," Higby says.

Since then, his fellow blogger Johnson has referred to Gatto as the "Infant Assemblyman," always accompanied by a photo of a bawling baby. "He was ... like, running to a teacher when he got picked on in school," Johnson explains.

Gatto claims that Higby was "bought off" by Eric Hacopian, a political consultant who worked for Gatto's 2010 Armenian-American opponent, Nayiri Nahabedian.

"These charges are so stupid," Hacopian says. "He really said that?"

(To be fair, Johnson has taken the side of many Hacopian clients, including Nahabedian, Adrin Nazarian, Luis Lopez and Rudy Martinez.)

Gatto's opponent on Nov. 6 is Greg Krikorian, a Republican, middle-aged, Armenian-American school board member and business owner. The campaign's sole debate, held last week in the packed Glendale City Council chambers, was a study in contrasts. Gatto was articulate, well-spoken and full of proposals. Krikorian was vague, given to long pauses and non sequiturs.

At one point, Krikorian actually said, "My exact plan is to have plans."

Gatto has rocketed into power in Sacramento, appointed to the chairmanship of the influential appropriations committee. And yet there were glimpses, at this debate, of the Gatto prickliness, which some say has rubbed his Sacramento colleagues the wrong way. When Krikorian accused Gatto of reading his answers, Gatto responded, "I've never seen such pettiness."

Later on, he said Krikorian's staff has been spying outside his family's home.

"I just came outside my house, and there were his staff members," Gatto says. "The first time I came out and they were milling about their car. Then one time they were sitting outside their car."

An aide to Krikorian, Art Tavana, says: "What does he mean? ... Why would we do that?" He does not directly deny the charge.

I read with interest your article "Mike Gatto's Blogger Problem."  In it, you pretty much acknowledge what I know to be true: that Mike Gatto is a breath of fresh air, and pretty close to everything the public wants to see in an elected official nowadays. Except that he is dogged by some petty, and dare I say, jealous individuals. Even putting aside the validity of you forcing a Democrat to answer to a likely biased right-wing blog, this voter believes that Mike Gatto and his supporters are right to be a little angry. If you saw the nastiness that the ethnocentric politics-as-usual crowd put Gatto (and the district) through in his four 2010 campaigns, you would be disgusted by them as I am, and you would understand Gatto taking a stand against that type of politics

Mike Gatto is a total hypocrite.  He used to sell pot when he was in school (to minors too!).  He didn't keep it a secret so ask anyone who knew him back then.  If you reporters want a scoop investigate him!

Gossip is not needed and does not help in a political campaign.  This article tells me nothing important; it's all chisme.  Don't be a plyotkenitzeh; be a journalist

@abramsrl The documentation we disclose today at Mayor Sam raises serious ethical questions about a past public contract awarded to Mike Gatto and whether if he did the work required.

@outwardmsj66 I realize that corruption is rampant at LA City Hall, but each case needs proof. That is why the Hollywood United Neighborhood Council called for a Federal Grand Jury investigation for the downsizing of the LAFD.

Your second document is not legible and I cannot find an itemization of when these hours were worked.  I would not assume that they were worked after the contract was signed.  It is not unusual for written contracts to be signed after a substantial portion of the work is done.

If the work was in fact done, then the timing of the signing may or may not raise a problem.  If the bill is a fraud in that the work was not done, then it looks like a criminal act.

The exhibit #2 is not legible enough for me to find the time period during which gate said he worked these hours.  Those facts are crucial.  I express no opinion whether the facts exist.  My comment is that I cannot see them for myself.  Maybe you can post a more readable version.

The hard-right Repugs at Mayor Sam just don't get it.  If they had any journalistic integrity, why would they use the term "support" various candidates?  (See their admissions below).  Any journalist knows that a journalist cant "support" a candidate!  What's next?  Quoting Karl Rove as a news source against Barack?  Wacky repugs...

@JamesTakano Strange how some could label myself as a "hard-right Repub", considering that I am supporting a Progressive, home-grown candidate in the 51st Assembly District Luis Lopez.

Surprised that the author finds Gatto so articulate. An articulate person knows his audience. At the debate he spoke about his bills as numbers with few or no details. Joe voter didn't know what the hell he was talking about. Nor that many of those bills went unsigned. He also stated that his seat was a "statewide office". And he came off as ungracious. (What the heck, thanks to my opponent for being here) This guy has no communication skills at all. Kind of a prerequisite for his chosen field.

Hillel - good post and I'm glad to see you quoted me in context. One thing to note that though the Mayor Sam blog was a major supporter of Councilman Paul Krekorian, we have not supported the candidates you mention that are Hacopian clients such as Nahabedian and Nazarian. The blog supported from the primary season on Sunder Ramani, both in the special and general elections in 2010. I don't know that we've written much about it, but we'd be supporting Jay Stern in the 46th. Indeed, we did support Rudy Martinez, regardless of his campaign consultant, we would have supported Martinez as the best hope to unseat Jose Huizar, who the blog has been a frequent and years long critic of.

Finally, we are strong supporters of Kevin James for Mayor, who is running against another Hacopian client, Jan Perry.

If Assemblyman Gatto thinks that we've been "bought off," by Mr. Hacopian, I sure haven't seen any checks. Unbelievable that this man is in elected office.

Hillel,

Nice to see the finish product on your initial journalistic foray into our Mayor Sam coverage of the "Infant Assemblyman Mike Gatto. That said, please indulge with me as I channel a journalistic, fact-checking persona, in the theme of presenting some corrections to your mostly factual content (at least in regards to the Mayor Sam content of your latest missive).

First, you stated the following,

That's when Mayor Sam blogger Johnson was handed some "opposition research" into Gatto by one of his political opponents, which Johnson posted on Mayor Sam, a provocative if rough-around-the-edges blog owned by Michael Higby.

The posts relied mostly on rumor and innuendo. Gatto responded in an unusual way, for a politician: He had his lawyer send Higby a cease-and-desist letter, calling Johnson's posts "unprovoked, unsubstantiated and libelous."

The fact is that the content that was refer to as "rumor and innuendo", was fact-based opposition research that highlighted Assemblyman Gatto's past legal work for insurance companies, questionable assertions from his past work on the El Pueblo Commission and documentation on a $15,000 Consulting Contract that saw Gatto submit a time sheet for $14,750 dollars, only 21 days after signing the contract. Other blogger's including Ron Kaye, posted the same contents without legal threats from Assemblyman Gatto.

Second, you stated,

One of the posts turned out, in fact, to be just that, falsely claiming that Mike Gatto had been evicted from his apartment in Westwood. That research was about a different Mike Gatto, and Higby had to issue an embarrassing correction.

For the record, the one item you noted was the only content that I posted which merited retraction (and I take full accountability). Gatto's other false assertions, were an fail attempt to bully myself from reporting other information provided by the opposition researcher. Again, all the content remove was posted on democratic and republican-leaning blogs, including former Daily News Editor Ron Kaye's Blog, without legal action by Assemblyman Gatto.

Third, you stated,

Gatto claims that Higby was "bought off" by Eric Hacopian, a political consultant who worked for Gatto's 2010 Armenian-American opponent, Nayiri Nahabedian.

"These charges are so stupid," Hacopian says. "He really said that?"

(To be fair, Johnson has taken the side of many Hacopian clients, including Nahabedian, Adrin Nazarian, Luis Lopez and Rudy Martinez.)

For the record, contrary to the assertions of "Gatto Truthers", I have never been on the payroll of Campaign Consultant Eric Hacopian, nor did I formally support Nayiri Nahabedian or Adrin Nazarian for public office. It is correct that I supported Rudy Martinez and am a current supporter for Luis Lopez in the 51st AD.

Again we thank you for your coverage of the factually-provocative Mayor Sam Blog and hopefully legions of republicans and democrats will comment (and educate you) on the real Infant Assemblyman Mike Gatto.

Respectfully,

Scott Johnson at Mayor Sam

Really?  Is there any doubt what is going on here?  Yegparian, Musurlian, Krekorian, Hacopian, Krikorian?  Sounds like some sour grape leaves.  3 of those 5 are failed candidates, and the other is their consultant.  As for Mayorsam, journalism has taken a serious dump when it quotes anonymous blogs, which are self-described as Republican, to tarnish a Dem.

Mr. Aron, Why haven't you written a story about the dirty politics used by Cristine Essel's operatives against Paul Krikorian in the City Council race? .. Or how some Jewish organizations negatively target prominent Armenians in the Democratic Party infrastructure, as you have done here? I think that I know the answer to my question. I was dealt such a blow some 30 years ago. Since my family is partially-Armenian and partially Jewish, once my Armenian heritage was revealed, i was effectively undermined..
