It's remarkable how Halloween won the fascination of both believers and doubters alike — but it's the one day on which everyone can unite and ask, somewhat philosophically, "What are you supposed to be?" The book chronicles the history of this macabre night, the traditions of which are as varied as the countries in which it enjoys continued popularity. Halloween is a madcap melange of the Gaelic harvest festival Samhain, the Catholic All Souls' Day and the dreams of executives at Mars Incorporated. And even if you're the most die-hard evangelical, loathing Halloween becomes a ritual in itself: that of decrying a day that leads children into everything from the hell of the dentist's office to the constant smelling of feet.
