More About

This year's Mummython celebrates both the holiday of Halloween and the 90th anniversary of the Egyptian Theatre itself with consecutive screenings of Mummy horror films The Mummy's Hand (1940), The Mummy's Tomb(1942), The Mummy's Ghost (1944), and The Mummy's Curse(1944). The formula of these films is fairly simple: a misunderstood mummy wants a new lease on life, the keys to which are generally locked up in the mind of its mate, reincarnated as a beautiful modern woman. It was a recipe for box-office success that held fast before the advent of las momias azteca de los '50s, Hammer Horror's desperately underrated '60s mummies, the cannibalistic zombie mummies of the '80s and the big-budget romantic reboot of the genre in the '90s. The Universal Mummy movies are as deathless as the mummies they depict, and they're all only about an hour long. I wonder what they think of these films in Egypt. Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd.; Hlywd.; Fri., Oct. 19, 7:30 p.m., $11. (323) 461-2020, americancinemathequecalendar.com
