From the Things Are Tough All Over Department comes student-director Giovanni Solis’ CSUN Senior Thesis Production, short film No Hay Nada Mas, which screens tonight, highlighting the plight of average people caught up in homelessness and exile on the fringes of society. No Hay Nada Mas focuses on a father and his two children, who are forced into living in a motel after their house is foreclosed on and his wife dies, and how their lives slowly wither under the twin suns of depredation and desperation. Funded in part by the Associated Students of Cal State Northridge and a robust Kickstarter campaign, the film was shot entirely on location in the San Fernando Valley. It also was filmed on vintage 35 mm film stock instead of digital, and further dirtied up with a photochemical process that emphasized the grit -- as if the subject matter wasn’t gritty enough.
