More About

UCLA’s monthlong salute to director Oscar "Budd" Boetticher Jr. continues with the double bill of noir masterpieces The Killer Is Loose (1956) and The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond (1960). In The Killer Is Loose, bespectacled Wendell Corey pulls an inside job and robs the L.A. bank where he works. The cops figure out he did it and get him. In the ensuing gunfight, Corey’s young wife is shot dead and the leader of the raid, detective Joseph Cotten, becomes the target of Corey’s revenge; snobby New York Times reviewer Bosley Crowther called the movie “third-rate.” In The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond, Ray Danton — who went on to portray the swashbuckling Sandokan in the ’60s film series — plays Legs Diamond, a small-time crook who assists gangster Arnold Rothstein in the 1920s. He falls in love and goes to Europe. Reading the news, Diamond finds out that the underworld he knew is changing with Prohibition. Hence, the fall. Oops! Boetticher died in Ramona in 2001. His autobiography is titled When in Disgrace. No kidding. Billy Wilder Theatre, Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Wstwd.; Mon., Aug. 6, 7:30 p.m.; $10. (310) 443-7000, hammer.ucla.edu.
