More About

George Cukor's A Star Is Born plays the Aero at 7:30. Judy Garland and James Mason received Oscar nominations. This is the 170-minute, digitally restored version.

Friday, July 13

Billy Bob Thornton showing up for a book signing is pretty cool on its own, but his performance as an ennui-laden barber in the Coen brothers' The Man Who Wasn't There — one of the best films of the aughts, no joke — makes a Friday visit to the Egyptian a must. Sam Raimi's windfall-gone-wrong movie A Simple Plan follows.

Whether or not you already know who gets eaten by a motherfucking shark in Deep Blue Sea, you should clearly drive, not swim, to its midnight showing at Cinefamily.

Saturday, July 14

Though Gone With the Wind may be only 1939's third best film (after The Rules of the Game and The Wizard of Oz, natch), the David O. Selznick–produced, Victor Fleming–directed tale of the Civil War and Reconstruction really is sweeping. The Aero gives you another chance to see it, in a digital restoration, on the big screen tonight at 7:30.

Sunday, July 15

Luchino Visconti's lush, three-hour adaptation of Giuseppe di Lampedusa's woeful The Leopard plays the Aero at 7:30. Regarded by some as the Italian Gone With the Wind, the film centers around a Sicilian nobleman, played by Burt Lancaster, who knows the royalty's time is nearing its end.

Wednesday, July 18

Almayer's Folly, the new, unlikely-to-be-widely-distributed film by Chantal Akerman (as in, Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles) is playing in L.A. for only the second (and possibly last) time, 7:30 at the Aero. Adapted from the Joseph Conrad novel, it concerns a Dutchman looking for Malaysian pirate treasure.
