Summer on the Plaza

This writer chortles whenever anyone refers to the DTLA arts district (only rubes do, yo), but she's happy to report the revitalized area is making great use of its public spaces for entertaining the populace. Two stand-out series are Grand Performances at Pershing Square and the sixth year of Summer on the Plaza, which does not in fact take place on "public" space, but, rather, at the Brookfield Office Property known as Figat7th. But with 13 lunchtime performances through Sept. 19, why quibble? This week's event offers "performance, poetry and music" with DJ Mona-Lisa, Long Beach-based poet-painter-photographer Jaha Zainabu, motivational poet Thea Monyee (HBO's Def Poetry Jam, L.A.'s Da Poetry Lounge) and actor Paul Mabon of the Actors Studio. So the space is owned and operated by a "global leader in the ownership and management of office assets." Whatevs. At least they're probably paying their performers. Figat7th, 735 S. Figueroa St., dwntwn.; Wed., July 18, noon-1:45 p.m.; free. artsbrookfield.com/Los_ Angeles/FIGat7th/event_274.htm.
