More About

Their music is haunting, luminous, probing, a mixture of lyrical beauty and unearthly primal sounds, where cellos groan, violins weep, electro-acoustics create layers of sonic mystery, and the world seems poised on the edge of either destruction or epiphany. Violinist Marielle Jakobsons, aka darwinsbitch, and cellist Agnes Szelag make up the Oakland-based duo myrmyr, and they delight in pushing their audiences way past known musical boundaries into an "intimate postclassical" universe that draws from a wide range of sources, in particular the folk elements of their common Eastern European ancestry. Their goal, they say, is simple: creative transformation. So prepare to be transformed this weekend, when they make their L.A. debut at sound., one of those SASSAS events that can't be defined, only experienced. Myrmyr may perform excerpts from Jakobsons' solo album Ore, hailed as "one singularly scary, fully formed and brilliant work," or from their record Fire Star, described by Fluid Radio as " a stirring work of frailty and beauty" -- or they just might compose a surprise on the spot, who knows? Kings Road Park Pavilion, 1000 N. Kings Road, W. Hlywd.; Sat., June 30, 5 p.m.; $15, $12 advance, $10 students. (323) 960-5723, sassas.org.
Sat., June 30, 5 p.m., 2012
