Cinefamily's Friday Night Frights series presents a special sneak preview of Alejandro Brugués' Juan of the Dead — so special, in fact, that it's happening on a Thursday. Brugués will be present for a Q&A about his Cuba-set zombie flick after the screening, though we may never know to which other movie — Dawn or Shaun — his title alludes more heavily.

Friday, June 22

Friday night in gnarly double features, the Egyptian is playing Tod Browning's surprisingly moving Freaks and Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls at 7:30. If the pre-Code Freaks (which is about more than just a group of sideshow attractions) doesn't impress you on its own, then consider how unlikely its very existence is: Irving Thalberg produced it for MGM at the height of the studio era.

Plus, Beavis and Butt-head Do America plays the Nuart at midnight. 'Nuff said.

Saturday, June 23

Saul Bass is one of the most revered graphic designers, well, ever, having created posters and title sequences for the likes of Hitchcock, Kubrick and Scorsese, in addition to countless corporate logos. Day one of Saul Bass on Film, a weekend-long retrospective at Cinefamily, focuses on a lecture documentary called Bass on Titles, lesser-seen commercials and segments of his industrial films.

Sunday, June 24

For day two of Saul Bass on Film, come back to Cinefamily for Phase IV, Quest and The Solar Film — Bass's only feature, a Ray Bradbury adaptation and an educational short, respectively.

Finally, ease into the last night of your weekend with the New Beverly's 7:30 screening of L.A. Confidential, Curtis Hanson's adaptation of the James Ellroy crime novel of the same name.
