Teachers are blessed with that great chaotic gift of not knowing how far their influence will ultimately reach when their students depart. Three of the late photographer Helmut Newton's students — Mark Arbeit, George Holz and Just Loomis — have written a tribute titled Three Boys From Pasadena: A Tribute to Helmut Newton(Factory/Le Joker), which they unveil this evening. It's a generous helping of images culled from three decades of inspiration from the students present during Newton's time at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Over the years, the "boys" were emboldened by Newton's encouragement, frequently conferring with him on their ongoing photographic works. The book is the outcome of a major exhibition in Berlin at the Helmut Newton Foundation (which he formed in 2003 with his wife, June, shortly before his death), which included letters, contact sheets and personal photographs. Three Boys From Pasadena is that rare chance to see just how deep an artist's roots grow, even as branches continue stretching outward, blossoming into something new and life-giving.
