More About

Mike Watt is very much a Hyphenated-Man, to borrow the title of his fourth solo album. The bassist-singer-poet-photographer-DJ also is the captain of his own mighty ship — a small white kayak that he plies through the waters near his beloved San Pedro hometown every morning. Dozens of Watt's vibrantly colorful photos of pelicans, lighthouses, bridges and container ships are assembled in his new book, On and Off Bass: A Photographic Memory (Three Rooms Press), which is interspersed with scraps of his poetry and journal entries. "The peacefulness of the boats is in such a conflict with the hell in my head," he writes. While some of the images of orange sunrises have a Hallmark quality, many of the photos are strikingly inventive, revealing yet another side of this modern-day Renaissance man. To celebrate the book's release, Watt performs this afternoon with one of his many bands, the Missingmen, following some rampantly arty word-slinging by way of the Lofty Canaanites, a poetic superduo with Saccharine Trust frontman Jack Brewer and incisive wordsmith S.A. Griffin. Beyond Baroque, 681 Venice Blvd.; Sat., May 5, 2 p.m.; $10. (310) 822-3006, beyondbaroque.org.
