Like The Shoulder, where playacting shifts to the real, here what is at once a simple construct becomes emotionally authentic. As with Auder's work, the camera and the collage create a necessary distance from otherwise emotionally raw situations. It goes from real to imaginary to real again, flowing back and forth between fiction and nonfiction, from the interior to the exterior. As both Auder and Ledare meaningfully attest, it is a space that is difficult and dangerous, though necessary, to traverse.
