More About

As a screening tie-in to LACMA's "California Design, 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way" show, animation historian Jerry Beck — curator of the monthly cartoon programs at Cinefamily — has put together Madcap Modernism, a compilation of toons from United Productions of America and other outfits whose work reflected the design of the times.

Cinefamily's Andrzej Zulawski retrospective continues through the weekend, and starting with L'Amour Braque tonight, each show will be preceded by the "world premiere" of David Lynch's Crazy Clown Time, the music video for the title track from the album Lynch released last fall. Meanwhile, 4:44 Last Day on Earth, directed by Lynch's contemporary Abel Ferrara, closes after tonight's shows at the Monica.

Fri., March 30

The USC School of Cinematic Arts is mounting a weekend-long tribute to late superproducer Dino De Laurentiis. In addition to a wide variety of screenings — including Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy and the John Milius-directed Conan the Barbarian tonight; Italian neorealist gem Bitter Rice, Serpico and Army of Darkness and tomorrow; and Lecter variations Manhunter and Hannibal on Sunday — the weekend will include a panel discussion with Martha and Raffaella De Laurentiis (Dino's widow and daughter, respectively), Michael Mann and Jonathan Mostow, followed by a reception. All is free to the public with reservations at cinema.usc.edu/dino.

Sat., March 31

The screening component of UCLA's Dviga Vertov retrospective comes to an end tonight with Vertov's 1924 feature Kino-Eye, as well as the final chapter of his newsreels series Kino-Pravda.

Sun., April 1

If you missed Zulawski's Possession in its one-week run in late February, Cinefamily is bringing it back for four nights, starting tonight.
