Orson Welles, of "War of the Worlds" fame, never made his own version of Heart of Darkness, but he wanted to. In 1939, he wrote a script based on Joseph Conrad's novel about the horror of being colonized and of being colonizer, but then RKO Pictures decided not to foot the hefty bill. This year, artist Fiona Banner asked local designers to propose posters for the unmade movie, then made intricate, elegant graphite drawings based on their ideas. "THE VILEST SCRAMBLE FOR LOOT THAT EVER DISFIGURED THE HISTORY OF HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS," reads one. She hung these at 1301PE and wrote her own version of Welles' screenplay in ink on the gallery's upstairs wall. 6150 Wilshire Blvd.; through May 5. (323) 938-5822, 1301pe.com.
