A workshop by Dutch avant luthier Yuri Landman doesn't happen every day. Even in this age of instant communication and superficial détente, artistic collaboration still involves a good deal of sweat and the burning of raw ideas. Presented by Brian Miller of Foot Village, Landman — inventor of cracked electronics and fractured guitar-based instruments for bands like HEALTH, Liars, Sonic Youth — introduces to these shores his latest iteration in instrumentation with his new Home Swinger string instrument. A cross between the guitar experimentation of late German genius Hans Reichel and some kind of nightmare gamelan, it's a 12-string machine that sounds at various points like anything from an electrical storm to fairy farts from on-high. He's show you how to make one out of ordinary household items like wood and stray steel — and you get the satisfaction of a job well-done when they're played in public the following evening.
