With the arresting name of Chunky Move, this contemporary dance company from Australia arrives with Connected, where the dancers sharing the stage with an enormous kinetic sculpture by California artist Reuben Margolin. Suspended like a lacy, metallic jellyfish with a fistful of strings, Margolin's construct floats, embraces, influences and participates in other ways with the human movement choreographed by Gideon Obarzanek. Down under, Chunky Move is known for adventurous explorations on what is or can be considered dance. Obarzanek unabashedly admits he is fascinated by the tension between the humanity of a dancer and the dancer as simply physical object moving in space. In Connected, the choreographer, the sculptor, the dancers and the sculpture give life and dance to that tension. This is also something of a swan song for Obarzanek, who founded and led Chunky Move since 1995, but began a transition earlier this year as Anouk Van Dijk assumes the artistic director mantle.
