More About

Ronald K. Brown and his ensemble Evidence are pure New York, but credit L.A. for the choreographer meeting Stevie Wonder, who voiced interest in dance being set to his music. That face time led to Wonder's songs fueling Brown's On Earth Together, which receives its West Coast premiere as part of the company's performances this weekend. The other two scheduled works boast equally deft music choices. Duke Ellington, Roy Davis Jr. and Fela Anikulapo Kuti provide the soundtrack for Grace and music by Wunmi is the backdrop for Ebony Magazine to a Village. Since 1985, this troupe has been known for its ability to explore African-American history and traditions in dance forms that combine elements simultaneously earthy yet spiritual. These dancers can explode onstage with the best, but the most moving moments are often the quieter ones when they seem to be absorbing waves of music before launching into their next movement.
