When you round up the best and brightest of L.A.'s cutting-edge pianists and hook them up with People Inside Electronics, aka PIE, aural visions abound. Founded by pianist-composer and USC prof Aron Kallay and composer Isaac Shankler, PIE has been presenting concerts focusing on innovative uses of electronics in music since 2009. This week, PIE presents Nothing Is Real: Psychedelia for Piano and Electronics, an evening of wild and amazing keyboard pieces that, according to Kallay, share "a slightly off-kilter relationship to reality. They're all astonishing and strange, sometimes even a bit trippy." The title refers to a work on the program, "Nothing Is Real (Strawberry Fields Forever)," legendary experimental music pioneer Alvin Lucier's reinvention of the Beatles hit that features a teapot and a miniature sound system. The program includes the world premiere of Shaun Naidoo's "Voices of Time," performed by Kallay; Pierre Jodlowski's "Serie Noire"; Linda Bouchard's "Gassho," a sort of otherworldly meditation combining piano and recordings of Tibetan bowl tones that the composer attributes to "channeling Zen and Schubert"; Charles Dodge's "Any Resemblance Is Purely Coincidental"; and Mike McFerren's "Torrid Mix." The esteemed performers include Vicki Ray, Rafael Liebich, Genevieve Feiwei Lee, Vatche Mankerian and Louise Thomas. Pierre's Fine Pianos, 11039 W.
