As If There Isn't Already Enough Sex in This Issue

Once a month in various venues around NYC, Dirty Looks presents a program of "queer experimental" short films to a diverse audience of art and film enthusiasts, sparking lively dialogue in an engaged community. Just over a year old, this underground-style series is already way above ground, bringing its adventurous, open-minded brand of avant garde to the West Coast. Dirty Looks' arrival in L.A. was precipitated by the Hammer Museum, which commissioned "Long-Distance Love Affairs," a more historical but no less impactful survey happening on Valentine's Day. Tonight's program, "Female Trouble" at Chinatown's Human Resources — a venue known for supporting risky, important art — features the work of eight artists using divergent tactics to explore and explode social constructs of gender. With a broad pedigree of references and influences in play, from Warhol to Anger, Hitchcock to Chaka Khan, fearless artists like Zackary Drucker, Rick Castro and Vaginal Davis take nothing for granted and take no prisoners. Expect humor, high art, revelation, intimacy and, best of all, the uncategorizable. Human Resources, 410 Cottage Home St., Chinatown; Thurs., Feb. 16, 8-10 p.m.; $8. dirtylooksnyc.org/tour.html.
Thu., Feb. 16, 8 p.m., 2012
