You could do worse than to start 2012 with a resolution to laugh more — and you usually have! Usher in the eventual destruction of the planet with the double-bill of Horse Feathers (1932) and Animal Crackers(1930). Beforehand, author Robert Bader will sign copies of the newly released paperback version of his book Groucho Marx and Other Short Stories and Tall Tales: The Selected Writings of Groucho Marx(Applause, $19.99) and both films will be introduced by Groucho's grandson Andy Marx. In Horse Feathers, Groucho presides over Huxley College, Harpo and Chico are pilfering football players from the other team, and Zeppo is romancing the doomed Thelma Todd, which means a few songs to snooze through before the quality jokes come back to wake you up. In Animal Crackers, yet another place of propriety — stuffy Margaret Dumont's estate on Long Island — is the backdrop for the Brothers' chortlesome antics while Groucho (as Captain Spaulding) searches for a stolen painting. Marx Brothers films are full of humor you might have missed when you caught them years ago, and both films screen in glorious 35mm.
