W.E. is the second feature film credited to former MTV queen Madonna, and the second film in 12 months, after The King's Speech, to dramatize the empire-imperiling affair between the future King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) and American divorcee Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), a woman who couldn't be queen. It was lambasted by critics at the fall festivals, with many citing a late-inning scene in which a Benzedrine-addled, World War II–era Simpson dirty-dances to "Pretty Vacant" by the Sex Pistols as particularly indicative of its maker's cluelessness.

Certainly, W.E. is the work of a woman who apparently hasn't spent time with normal human beings in a while (dig the Pottery Barn catalog loft in "scary" Brooklyn occupied by the film's Wise Ethnic, who is of course a genius slumming as a security guard, and who of course saves the day with his virility). But Madonna's anachronistic use of music is the least of her movie's problems.
In telling the story of the Simpson affair through the blatantly whacked lens of Wally (Abbie Cornish), an unhappy trophy wife in late-'90s Manhattan, who becomes obsessed with the "fairy tale" romance of Wallis and Edward when the couple's effects are auctioned by Sotheby's, Madonna borrows heavily from the music-video form she's already mastered: aesthetics first, with an anything-is-possible antilogic. It's basic storytelling that stymies her.
There is a kernel of a fascinating film here about the dangers of coveting luxuries (particularly someone else's), and of imbuing beautiful things with imagined life. But as Wally's story goes on (and on, and on ... ), the admittedly gorgeous film falls increasingly deeper into the fetishization it takes as its subject, repeatedly imbuing clothes and jewelry with heavy symbolism, forgetting any impulse to critique. But even a shot of a pearl necklace falling off a woman as she's being beaten by her husband is too dumb to really gall. "Pretty Vacant" is perhaps a more apt theme song than Madonna realizes. —Karina Longworth (Opens Dec. 9 at the ArcLight Hollywood for a one-week qualifying run.)

I happened to see the film in Toronto and enjoyed it very much. Your review is not about the film. You obviously have issues with Madonna and are using this review as a personal attack on the most famous woman in the world who has sold over 300 million records, had the highest grossing tour for a solo artist in 2009, and is responsible for feeding and caring for thousands of orpharns in Malawi...so instead of attacking an individual who has accomplished so much, you should take a look at yourself I'm the mirror and review your own life.
after reading this review with my boyfriend. we cant wait to see this movie. we don't care about the reviews, they always bash madonna anyways, so this review isnt anything new and it wont affect me from going to watch this film that interest me.
I'm just your average 'Joe' who saw the movie premiere in London and went back for the matinee performance next day cos I loved it. Incidentally so did most people around me, mainly film buffs at a film festival and critics indeed. When I watch a movie I just want to be entertained and I was. All these references to Madonna's music career, her videos etc, don't interest me. I didn't go to see a 'Madonna movie', she's not yet established enough to want to do that, I just went to see a movie that I liked the idea of, and to judge for myself. I don't want other people telling me what to see or what not to see, it's a personal thing. I absolutely loved this movie, in particular the two stories decades apart. I thought they were interwoven well. If I was asked, I would say go see it and judge for yourself, you certainly won't walk out.Critics are paid to write a column so dissecting is their business and criticising, especially Madonna, is the norm. Give the woman some credit for seeking to expand her creative medium knowing that every aspect would be scrutinised with a microscope. This woman has balls and personally I preferred this movie to The King's Speech. That's just a personal 'average Joe' critique!!
Well, enough of these useless "critics".
It is time now to see the film and judge by ourselves as so many "normal" people thinks that the film is good.
If a man have written and directed this film it would have received positive review. But it's a woman and that woman happens to be Madonna. The film it self is not judge but the person behind the project. I grew up in the real MTV era. Madonna broke down the barriers for how a female recording artist should behave. She had NO one and No man control her. That is where the backlash and hatred began.Certainly there were many other female singers in her days that were outrageous. But she took control of her career and image from day one. As she have said before, "absolutely no regrets!" 25 years later Madonna still will never have critics applaud her for any of her work. We have had many gay icons in the past, and woman of power. But our society would not be where we are now with out Madonna, kicking that door down. Now these days its a hip thing for new pop tarts to defend the gay community. With Madonna she's just a gay man trap in a woman's body with big balls....
Also, how much did you get paid to write this again? I'm sure you got a little bitter and felt some guild when Harvey Weinstein praised Madonna and Patti Smith gave her a standing ovation along with the rest of the entire theatre.
That's funny, since the people who are not writing for magazines on twitter have ALL (and I do mean literally everyone) said that they all loved the movie and not to listen to critics.. Guess that's what I'll do then.
This Critics really proves that Madonna is not a director but a Great American singer-songwriter, actress and entrepreneur. but then, you can consider that this is just a first test run for her as a director & if it's so you can consider that she did a good job as her first movie. Who really knows if she is going to be gets better at it or what. because when it comes to making stuff She get better & better as you can see from her art. Hate is BAD.
How does this critique prove anything other than most men are scared of the power of this woman!
