As a dancer, the late Bella Lewitzky began as the muse of modern dance pioneer Lester Horton; she matured into a respected choreographer leading a dynamic dance company that became a training ground for a generation of young dancers who shaped the L.A. dance world and now lead dance companies throughout SoCal and beyond. That far-reaching Lewitzky legacy is on view as two companies led by Lewitzky alumni join forces to showcase their respective strengths as well as a collaborative effort inspired by their mentor. John Pennington leads his locally based Pennington Dance Project in Yield of Vision, employing LED lighting and mirror effects to consider "perception, voyeurism and exhibitionism." Yolande Yorke-Edgell first established her Yorke Dance Project in L.A., though England is now its home. YDP brings City Limitless, conjuring up the journeys of Jack Kerouac and the stirrings of the Beat generation with a soundtrack of original 1950s songs and a video of the actual places visited in Kerouac's seminal On the Road. Pennington and Yorke collaborated online and via Skype to pay tribute to Lewitzky in Overlay, with four scores from three musicians in what the dancemakers describe as movement overlaid to "create a kinetically charged border-crossing dance." With performances last weekend in Long Beach and this week in Pasadena, that's two chances to see these splendid companies.
