The seductive elements clothed in the cautionary tale of Little Red Riding Hood, the sucker punches tucked inside the appealing quirky poetry of Shel Silverstein, and the hidden potential in the electronic music of Filip Zachary are grist for Subtext, a triptych of new works by three award-winning SoCal choreographers for the dancers of Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company. Holly Rothschild is well known for her work as co-founder of the music/choreography collective String Theory with its monstrous stringed constructs. Here, Rothschild employs a dozen LACDC dancers as she brings an adult perspective to Red Riding Hood’s adventures as a sexually imbued coming of age tale. Having made his mark as artistic director of Orange County's high-energy BARE Dance Company, Mike Esperanza confirms the overt and subtle elements in Silverstein's popular poetry were never just for kids. Rounding out the trio, LCDC artistic director Kate Hutter serves up a segment of her latest surveying Zachery's electronica and found sound scores, a sampling of a full-length work set for next February.
