Sound Is Everything

The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound, aka SASSAS, could never be accused of presenting anything conventional, which is why their concerts are so fun. This week, SASSAS unveils yet another sassy-assed sonic experience. Sound. at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook features new compositions by percussionist Alex Cline, the experimental collective Lady Noise and brass specialist William Roper, performed by more than 30 musicians stationed in different locations across the historic Overlook. The program includes Cline's Overlook, a work based on the subject headings in the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook visitor's center educational materials; an untitled work by Lady Noise that the ensemble describes as "washes of white noise, whistling and breath. The drone of chatter through wind ... collated histories of grasses, planes, pumping jacks, and dry lips mingle under a blanket of smog"; and William Roper's Fanfares and Arhoolies, a combination of the noisy fanfare and "arhoolies," or plantation field hollers, songs sung by laboring slaves. The concert begins at the apex of the Overlook and concludes in the Safine Rabines Pavilion next to the park visitor center. "Come prepared for a steep climb up the Overlook stairs." 6300 Hetzler Road, Culver City; Sun., Oct. 16, 3 p.m.; free; street parking available along Jefferson Boulevard; $6 Overlook parking.
