Reitman Does Hughes

This month, LACMA partners with nonprofit Film Independent for a new film series that will include a string of "Live Reads" curated by director Jason Reitman. For his first event, the Oscar-nominated Reitman (Juno, Thanks for Smoking) takes a stab at directing a live screenplay reading of The Breakfast Club. It's no surprise that Reitman is attempting to put his own spin on the '80s John Hughes teen classic; his father, director Ivan Reitman, was the man behind one of the decade's other big hits, Ghostbusters. With an as-yet-unnamed cast — Reitman will tweet the actors' names starting next week — it'll be interesting to see which celeb pals Reitman wrangles to play hoodlum John Bender, prissy Claire Standish, jock Andrew Clark, basket case Allison Reynolds and nerd Brian Johnson (Michael Cera would be perfect in the Anthony Michael Hall part and his Juno co-star, Ellen Page, is a no-brainer in the Ally Sheedy role). Then there's the school janitor and tough-talking vice principal Richard Vernon, who utters the film's immortal line, "Don't mess with the bull, young man, you'll get the horns." LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd.; Thurs., Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m.; $10, $7 seniors & students. (323) 857-6000.
Thu., Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m., 2011
