How Do You Like Your Contemporary Ballet?

In a week sparkling with imported dance bling, this concert marking the 30th anniversary of the Francisco Martinez Dancetheatre has a more pearlesent quality, but is equally a gem. For the occasion, Lester Horton Award winning Martinez reprises two of his loveliest works, the lyrical and dreamy Moonlit Dances (2002) set to Franz Liszt piano compositions and in a starker vein, Orbital Dances (2008) interpreting Mark Mercury's electronica. Martinez also unveils his newest, Punto d'Incontro that promises a romantic yet sly look at chance encounters with backing from 1950s Italian song standards. As always, Martinez has assembled a strong lineup of dancers including Michele Bachar, Veronica Caudillo, Kate Highstrete, Miguel Loera, Rowdy Metzger, Marcos Perez and Kelly Ann Sloan, all equally conversant in the blend of ballet and contemporary dance Martinez' choreography demands.
