More About

Has it really been 25 years since that insanely eclectic little art gallery opened to lines down the stairs and around the block from that sweltering little space on Melrose? The La Luz de Jesus 25th Anniversary group show is the brainchild of curator Billy Shire's pop surrealist lovechild of low-brow culture and high art, and it's in two parts. The first, running Oct. 7-30, features artists Joe Coleman, Matt Groening, Mary Fleener, Kozik, Krystine Kryttre, Gary Panter, S. Clay Wilson and Robert Williams -- among dozens of others -- and the second, which runs Nov. 4-27, features Howard Hallis, becca, Mark Mothersbaugh, The Pizz, Mark Ryden, Christine Wu and Shag -- among many other dozens more. Each exhibition features an altar dedicated to the gallery's fallen artists, which is a rather pleasantly poignant touch. Last Gasp Books, longtime brothers-in-arms with La Luz, is publishing a companion book with all the images from the show in case you couldn't show up -- and if you didn't make it way back when to that Zap Comix group exhibition with Crumb and Williams and all the other cartoonists in person, you know what a damning prospect that could be. La Luz de Jesus, 4633 Hollywood Blvd., Hlywd.; reception Fri., Oct. 7, 8 p.m.; exhibit runs thru Oct. 30; free. (323) 666-7667, laluzdejesus.com.
Fri., Oct. 7, 8 p.m.; Oct. 8-30, 2011
