More About

Over the span of four years, Dr. Paul Koudounaris traversed three continents to photograph and document reliquaries fashioned from human remains. (Some centuries ago, they were all the rage.) Organized around giant, jaw-dropping prints from Koudounaris' one-of-its-kind tome, The Empire of Death: A Cultural History of Ossuaries and Charnel Houses, Dark Echo Park is a freaky, freewheeling celebration of the "weird and macabre," with works by Demonbabies, eyeball-obsessed animator Dr. Mangor, large scale fabric atmospherics, "the alternate reality otherwise known as Joe Holliday" and--casting a net far outside the east side for good measure--Bay Area visionary David Normal's complete (self-illuminating) Illumination series, a highlight of Burning Man '10, making its Los Angeles debut. Sancho unveils this eclectic collection tonight; tomorrow comes the opening reception, and later in the month, a Halloween soiree and other surprises. Sancho Gallery, 1549 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park; exhibit runs Oct. 13-31; gallery open 1-6 pm. Reception Fri., Oct. 14. 7 p.m.; mid.; free. (310) 406-6855, empiredelamort.com.
