Venice 311 Commotion

Reactions were heated to Simone Wilson's story on the ongoing controversy surrounding the Venice 311 website and the smear campaign against its founder, Alex Thompson, by her former mentor "Boston" Dawna Chaet ("Clamor Over Venice 311," Aug. 26). Thompson has received criticism and praise from Venice locals, but the criticism has started to pile up thanks to Chaet alleging that Thompson is an ex-con embezzler (which turned out to be true) and questioning her relationship with the LAPD.

The story stirred up some emotions:

Elinor L. writes: "So Captain Peters says LAPD isn't affiliated with Venice 311, but [paparazzo] Tony Vera suddenly has all these privileges and [LAPD Officer] Peggy Thusing shows up at this woman's house? And the LAPD doesn't care that a convicted felon has a police scanner and is showing up to crime scenes? Huh?"

Commenter Lisa adds: "It will be a real loss to Venice if Peggy Thusing gets embroiled in a scandal caused by this entrepreneurial interloper. But it sure seems like there is more to tell when the police captain has to make a distinction out of 'official' relationships. Before the police count on Thompson's 311 franchise, I hope they will remember that even a broken clock is right twice a day."

Mrsb writes: "It would be a real shame if Venice 311 gets mistaken for a real Neighborhood Watch program. This is just pure vigilantism. Neighborhood Watch is neighbors getting to know each other and looking out for their community and each other. In our Neighborhood Watch program, while we do report incidents to the police, we are more about learning how to keep our community a secure and safe place by taking precautions as a neighborhood. We don't have to go listening to radio dispatches and chase after suspects.

"Venice 311 seems less about community and more about chasing after what they consider undesirables in Venice. I thought the police of Venice were far more concerned with neighborhood safety than accompanying these self-appointed vigilantes on patrol."

A guest commenter writes: "I saw Alex 20 minutes ago painting over graffiti on Speedway. What do the rest of you have to say for yourselves? She's hot, she gets the job done while a group of gripers bitch and moan. Who could blame her for not wanting to deal with all the haters in this town. All I know is Venice 311 is addictive and real. Posers step up or shut up!"

Madeleine Gallay writes: "How terrible is it to have innuendo and criticism for doing good things in a community? This is hardly a question of gentrification versus funky. Bad things happen in Venice and the city of L.A. spends little time cleaning it up. Is there an implication that Alex is 'interfering' by removing trash and abandoned mattresses, cleaning up tagging and responding to Venice residents who often check in with her before trying the police?

"Please note that because of her work, we have an extensive police presence, albeit in cute shorts, with a hands-off attitude during the crazy weekends, which absolutely discourages the gang shootings during Drum Circle.

"She does good and that must be noted."

LAPDWatcher says, "You have to hand it to the freakshow that is Venice that even their cops are of marginal morals! I am disgusted that they support a convicted ex-con artist: 'Both LAPD's Peters and Thusing say that even if she did embezzle $65,000, it wouldn't affect Venice 311.' I can't think of anyplace else in Los Angeles that the cops would be so dismissive of their professional relationship with an ex-con."

Lastly, Disappointed writes: "I have lived on the Marina Peninsula for almost 20 years and saw Dawna in action for the majority of them. There really is no difference between what Dawna did and what people say this Alex person does. Dawna talked to all the cops, went to all the meetings, had a scanner, rode a bike and called in on criminals.

"So Alex does the same thing and she is condemned. Why, because she's pretty? Because she may or may not be this person portrayed in the article? We shouldn't forget that Dawna had a lot of enemies, too. I am not sure of her past and could really care less. It is sad that this is what our community has been reduced to.

"We are losing the battle to keep this area a somewhat nice place to live because people are wasting time on jealous, vindictive squabbles instead of working together to solve problems. Frankly, Dawna, Alex, the author of this article, and the rest of them, including half of those morons at Yo! Venice!, can go to hell. I have conceded that this immature back-and-forth ranting has crushed my community. And today I'm ashamed to say I'm a Venetian."

So let me see if I understand what's going on here. We have someone that may or may not have a criminal background that may or may not have followed her from Texas. So how many people has she stolen money from since she's been in Venice? Why is her past (true or not) taking away from her present state of her being, as a servant to our Venice community and an ally to our local police?

We accept reformed drug addicts, drug dealers, adulterers, crooked politicians (some who were adulterers), burglars, gang bangers, heck even rapists and plenty of other criminals I may have failed to mention, that have turned their lives around and use those same "skills" to help law enforcement (with the knowledge of what they have done) to educate our youth, protect our families, help women be aware of their surroundings and even help improve our communities. Some have gone on to have their own TV shows using their "criminal skills" to help prevent the same type of crimes they committed and we praise them for what they got away with for so long because they decided to turn their lives around. And they make millions because of their criminal backgrounds? So What's WRONG with this picture?!

We criticize our local law enforcement for not doing enough and then we criticize them for getting involved with someone who never did any real harm to anyone in Venice and who in my less than 5 years as a Venetian, has improved the quality of life for me as well as my neighborhood. I know for a fact that if Alex was a murderer or some cat burglar with a "real" record that our local police would have nothing to do with her. But an embezzler? Really? Seriously? Our local police needs all the help they can get considering the amount of criminal transient population that is being dropped off at our door steps since all the other communities outside the 3 mile radius of Venice refuse to deal with them, using Venice as a dump site.

For a while Yo' Venice provided local information of the crimes being committed and alerting us of them "after the fact" like any local newspaper and that was cool since I didn't have to pay to learn about it. Don't get me wrong, it’s still is a great neighborhood watch on line "newspaper".

Venice311 takes it a step further. They report/tweet the news as it happens and at times are right in the middle of it filming, taking photos and tweeting it every step of the way, as they did some weeks ago when we had a home invasion that was around So. Venice Blvd and they were there when the police found the perp in a trash can on 29th place or Ave. Because of Alex and her Venice311 team, we knew to stay the heck out of the streets so the police can do their job safely and we all applauded Alex and her team for keeping us inside and safe while they helped the police document and ultimately catch the bad guys.

This is not vigilantism, this is activism and maybe the haters should learn the difference.

I was a big fan of Boston Dawna until her EGO got in the way. Instead of praising her protégé for taking it up numerous notches, she dogs her for being better at it. Dawna didn't have the knowledge or resources Alex developed with Venice311, using her "skills" to protect our communities and that is why the police can do a better job as they can use all the help they can get from an alleged "embezzler" with incredible computer savvy and determination. How pathetic of Dawna to let her ego run wild trying to take down someone who's doing a better job of servicing our community. Stay retired Dawna and let your protégé do what you couldn't accomplish in all the years you were patrolling Venice with your scanner and bad ass attitude. Your student is now your teacher. Have you learned anything yet? No? Then stay in Boston, retired and get some sleep. Your reign is over and the torch has been passed on to a better way.

BTW- Yo' Venice, if you have anything to do with this smear campaign and it back fires, remember that if the safety of Venice that you help start and Venice311 took to the next level ever disappears, you'll have no one to blame but yourselves. You're a local newspaper online and Venice311 is the reporter out on the field bringing the news to us and yes to you as well as it happens so you can keep the neighborhood watch programs up to date on what's happening.

You don't have to like each other as long as you both are working for the same common cause...Venice's safety and comm-"Unity " awareness. If what has been said about you is not true - then support her efforts even if it's just by keeping your opinions to yourselves and not stirring up the pot. If it's true - Grow up! You can't do it alone. Brett, don’t be like Dawna. Jealousy is poison.

The same holds true for Venice311 Alex. Stay focused on the big picture, let Yo’ Venice do what it does, they need you and you them and the rest will take care of itself. Do like our protected ducks who own Venice do. Keep on strutting and when someone throws something at you, just let it roll off your back. They, like you, know where you are going and the rest is just what it is - Gossip! After all this is the land of movie stars and gossip. Most thrive on it cause the truth is so boring.

Venice needs both Venice311 and Yo' Venice. Can't you just get along for the greater good?

And to the rest of the haters, if you're not willing to put on a bright orange vest with a helmet looking like a city street cleanup worker on a go cart picking up trash that you just walk by and complain about.. then keep quiet and watch how it's done and be grateful for Venice311.

Why is the discussion being taken over to here? The comments at the article are about the issues over the article: veracity, reliability, relationships (healthy and otherwise) and what is good community participation. It is not metacommenting, commenting on comments.

When will the weekly let us know what they know and when they knew it. Smear? no way!

Lisa35714

Smear campaign is a really specific term that implies spreading falsehoods that have nothing to do with the issues at hand. That is not the case here (although some of the online comments on last week's article are irrelevant attacks about teeth, cigarettes and "hot"ness.) The original criticisms (legally documented) about Amie Thompson / Alex Thompson are relevant to her work, to the community in which she lives and to police activity, and she continues to lie about them. Just because previously unknown information is brought to light, however aggressively, doesn't make it a smear.

Really!?
Really!?

So you've never done anything wrong in your life where fessing up to it was the only option. Please! Grow up.
