Thompson barely bats an eye: "The minute Venice 311 gained any amount of attention — it's sort of like little kids."
She has used her mix of charm and aggression to repeatedly brush off the allegations that, under the name Amie Thompson, she pleaded guilty to embezzling $65,000 from a Texas photographer in 1996.

After several interviews with the Weekly, during which Thompson repeatedly denied it, the Weekly determined that Thompson's denials are untrue. Dawna is correct.
At the Travis County, Texas, probation office, spokesman Donald Clark confirmed that a blond, green-eyed white woman with the same name, birthdate and Social Security number as Thompson pleaded guilty to the crime, and was on probation until April 2008. Neil Kucera, her attorney, shown a photo of Thompson, verified positively that she was his client in the mid-'90s embezzling case.
Thompson violated her probation in 2004 and a warrant was issued for her arrest. But Kucera says prosecutors "got tired of messing with her, and discharged her in a dissatisfactory manner. In other words, they were saying, 'We're so tired of messing with you, we don't even want to bother putting you in prison.' "
Yet here she is, this dashing self-described survivor of the dot-com bubble — she claims she sold her company to Sony for millions — holed up in a Venice Beach one-bedroom with a couple yappy dogs and the 24/7 cackle of an LAPD scanner.
Says Thompson, "I have absolutely no business being a CEO. I'm not personable. People and their problems, that's not my game."
But in Venice, that's always the game. Around the time Dawna departed for the East Coast, the hot-button issue was whether RV dwellers should be allowed to park their homes in front of Venice's arty, overpriced beach shacks.
In "Gentry Against Funky in Venice," a Weekly article in 2010, Dennis Romero wrote that the RV issue had "exposed a fault line in Venice, a once uniformly liberal, if not terminally contentious, community."
That's how Dawna and Thompson, both living in the Marina at the time of a huge, awful RV sewage-dumping on their block, first met.
On one side were the righteous RV dwellers and pro-homeless bleeding hearts. On the other were those who felt bad but would rather homeless people consolidate their stink to a designated parking lot nightly.
The two sides accused each other of nighttime attacks, planting dog shit in mailboxes and dressing up as bums to sneak into each other's top-secret meetings. Actually, Thompson's pretty proud of that last one, which was true.
But with a straight-laced police blog in the mix, Venice isn't just left versus far-left anymore.
"I have never seen Alex be critical of anything the LAPD has done," says Linder, the L.A. radio journalist.
He thinks the popularity of Venice 311 marks a "fundamental shift from the 'live and let live' mentality that Venice has enjoyed since its birth in 1904, to a pro-'Law and Order' sensibility that has come with gentrification."
Linder says the reaction to Thompson is "a battle for ownership of this community ... a battle for the heart and soul of Venice."
Vera, the videographer who works with Thompson, says people who see crime-fighting as going against Venice's core values "are living in La-La Land" and have no idea what it takes to create a safe community. Thompson, he feels, is "putting her ass on the line."
His personal gains have been considerable, too. Before Vera began shooting videos for Venice 311, the LAPD never gave him the time of day. "Now Captain Peters gives me interviews, calls me Tony," he says. "Why? Because of Venice 311."
Vera says quite a few cops have told him, "Thank God you're there, because it shows people we're doing the right thing."
As the Weekly interviews Thompson one day, LAPD Officer Peggy Thusing shows up in search of a Vera-made video that could help disprove a recent citizen complaint alleging she beat up a guy while detaining him on the boardwalk.
Thompson hands a burned disc of the incident to the cop, and Thusing thanks her profusely.
Thusing, who was originally quoted in the AP article as saying of Dawna, "We're going to miss her, that's for sure," now shakes her head. Dawna's crusade against Thompson "makes me sick to my stomach," she says.
Thusing, unaware of the Weekly's recent discovery that Alex Thompson is indeed the ex-embezzler Amie, says of Dawna's claim: "She was reaching. If you ask me."
Both LAPD's Peters and Thusing say that even if she did embezzle $65,000, it wouldn't affect Venice 311. Thusing says the stress off her since Thompson started the blog is "tenfold."
Her close friend Vera just settled a lawsuit against boxing megastar Mike Tyson for allegedly attacking him at LAX when Vera was a paparazzo. He'll be using part of Tyson's payout to buy Thompson a new $2,600 electric bike, in return for money and support she lent him during the litigation.
"She's moving into my building, and we're going to fight crime together," says Vera, who manages an apartment building on Pacific Avenue. He plans to install a webcam outside to monitor the crosswalk.

The questions that remain to be answered are; 1) If Ms. Thompson has a criminal history, where and what has she been convicted of?, and, 2) Does the LAPD prohibit its officers from fraternizing with convicted persons and "person of ill-repute"? If so, what is Internal Affairs doing about this? The whole thing doesn't smell right unless these questions are answered.

In the Patch it says Alex Thompsone got a restraint order on Boasting Donna for 18 months so Donna can't harass Alex um ok... But can Boston still send emails to Amy Thomson?

Hey, if she did it, she did it. It's on the record. Same with hair lady - if she got hit with a business license problem and/or other violations, she did wrong.
They both seem to have done some good.
The surface question - whether their do-gooding balances their bad actions - is not the issue here. The issue is whether they have the skills and the judgment to do right.
Calling in LAPD to break up a rooftop party is one thing.
Calling them in on a false kidnapping charge is quite another.
Getting a friend to publicize it in a second friend's online blog is way over the edge.
The fake kidnapping call was audacious - but plausible deniability probably prevents prosecution there. Even so, it's still a surface action (And very public - her friends made sure of that). And it could even have been a human mistake.
Mental stability isn't the issue. The ring of known associations, histories of their similar actions, stretching legal boundaries, creating vigilante-run, alternate communications systems - these are things that deserve follow-up, and not just by a smart reporter with a good nose.
In this week's edition, the Weekly calls this a "smear campaign". Smear campaign is a really specific term that implies spreading falsehoods or gossip that have nothing to do with the issues at hand. That is not the case here (although some of the online comments on last week's article are irrelevant attacks about teeth, cigarettes and "hot"ness.) The original criticisms (legally documented) about Amie Thompson / Alex Thompson are relevant to her work, to the community in which she lives and to police activity, and she continues to lie about them. Just because previously unknown information is brought to light, however aggressively, doesn't make it a smear.
Unless Captain Peters or Chief Beck approved this, Venice 311 may be breaking the law (they have ads on their site, a web store and repeatedly ask the community for monetary donations) according to monitoring times:
The City of Los Angeles in two local ordinances restricts the use of scanners within the city limits. First, SEC. 52.44 titled "Willfully listening to Police and Fire Departments portable radio messages prohibited" makes it unlawful for any person to willfully listen by means of any radio receiving device located in or upon any vehicle to any official message which is being transmitted by the Police Department or Fire Department of the City of Los Angeles or any law enforcement agency over a radio transmitting station owned or operated by such city or agency.
The City ordinance does not apply to persons to whom a permit to listen to such radio messages has been issued in writing by the Chief of Police of the City of Los Angeles. And those permits are completely discretionary, which means they may be issued after he determines that public interest will be served by the issuance of such permit but don’t have to be issued. The City law does not apply by its own language to any officer, agent, or servant of any government agency or public utility, the performance of whose duty as such officer, agent or servant, requires that he listen to such messages.
The City of Los Angeles, like the State of California, also prohibits listening for financial or, most certainly, criminal advantage. Its Sec. 52.46 titled "Use of Short Wave Radios" provides that “[n]o person who intercepts, overhears or receives any message or communication transmitted by any radio transmission station operating upon a wave length or radio frequency assigned by the Federal Communication Commission for use by any police or law enforcement department shall, for the financial benefit of himself or another communicate such message or communication to another or directly or indirectly use the information so obtained.”
Venice 311 is still twittering and representing their information as coming from the LAPD Scanner. Given the law, maybe Cpt Peters did allow them use of the scanners, which would then mean he lied to the LA Weekly when he claimed there was no relationship. This should be figured out!!
If you are concerned like me, call or email City Attorney Carmen A. Trutanich's office to have them check the legalities and if it was approved by the LAPD. The same LAPD that denied any relationship with Venice 311.
It is also suspicious that Venice 311 has asked for money from the community for months as a non-profit organization 501(C)3. This status has been pending for 6-8 months? That is highly irregular, but something the IRS will be able to figure out.
Venice311 is a non-profit. And last I checked, she rides a bike. And I don't read it like you that a permit is needed to have a scanner. What about radioreference.com? Or the LAPDonline.org online scanner?? Or radio shack having scanners lined up on their shelves? I have the scanner app on my phone and I listen to the police stuff all day. Crime??? So, if it is, then maybe they should take a look at Dawna too......... She had a scanner and rode her bike for years! Or better yet, let's tell the police department to arrest ALL of the Venice residents who now have scanners because Concerned Resident AKA "I don't live here" said it's a crime.
I was told that the meeting was hosted by the Venice Beach Boardwalk Association, in a fancy hotel, whose owner paid for lights on the police and park building down by the water. And other respectable business owners were supposedly there. So if Sally's husband wanted to donate money to that Association to help the community, that's wrong? So, I guess Starry Night is saying anyone who contributes to the boosters or helps the police department is in colusion in some manner???? That's immature and stupid.
The more I think of this the more interesting this story becomes.
If Peters approved this, he lied to the LAWeekly. If he didn't approve it, Venice 311 is probably breaking the law with their scanner updates.
I hope the LA Weekly follows up on this.
I have been to most of the Pacific Area Community Police Advisory Board meetings and he absolutely endorses Alex, Sally, and Sally's husband. Many times he asks them to share their information with the group, and at one meeting he thanked Sally and her husband for donating $2500 to an LAPD sports outing; and then told the group that Sally was going to donate some cameras for the OFW surveillance initiative and that Alex was appealing to Time Warner Cable for donated bandwidth for said cameras. Additionally, Rob Kadota - who is the civilian chair of the board, and must have a background check prior to assuming that position, FYI - wrote on a website (LA Weekly will not let me post links) the following statement: "Congratulations to the Venice 311 team. Well deserved. Your partnerships with LAPD and community are most appreciated. - Rob Kadota, Co-chair Pacific LAPD Community Police Advisory Board."
If none of the above smacks of partnerships and/allegiances, I'm not sure what does.
Well, I do hope you will be wary of your financial dealings with her. You seem like someone who tries hard to do some good with your money; and for your sake, I hope you are correct. Her conviction looks valid, so hold on to your pocketbook - I've known a lot of crooks, and charm and stamina are their greatest weapons. And thanks again for your NAACP support! They're a great organization, and I'm grateful for their assistance - proud to say that today, I'm working on my second Master's degree!

Not at all. I am not business partners with Alex. I have learned you never do business with friends anyway. So, no worries here! She is my friend, and I believe these accusations are false so that's my opinion on that. I like what Alex is doing with the graffiti clean up and mattress removal, clean up etc. She deals with some pretty filthy trash pick up duty that I myself won't/can't stomach, so kudos to her! That is something I think Venice needs a lot more of. Anyway, that's great that you got a scholarship from the NAACP!
It sounds like you spread some of your cash around to great organizations (I had a partial college scholarship from NAACP, so thumbs-up)! But like another L.A. Weekly article about Tom's Shoes, I am curious - in light of Alex Thompson's criminal past, especially since her crimes were financial - have you been wondering where your money and other donations are going? Are you nervous that you too could be swindled, like the photographer in the article?
In response to Starrynight1969's comments in regards to my husband and my donations to LAPD for the Sports outing for 2500$ this is absolutely true. This was donated to Pacific area Boosters Association. Which a copy of the check can be provided for anyone to see. LAPD is always grateful for any donations to the Boosters. In fact, the officers had a great time playing golf that day, and footage can be seen on Venice 311 website, fabulously shoot by Tony Vera. The Venice 311 team is Alex and many other volunteers in this non profit organization. Every weekend Alex has a slew of volunteers to cover up graffiti and pick up trash to help maintain the boardwalk. Which is mostly my husband Mike, and other early bird Venetians (not me). Along with donations of graffiti removal supplies, paint and other cleaning products to Venice 311, my husband and I have volunteered and donated our time and support to many other organizations. Including Venice Chamber of Commerce, ASPCA, NAACP, VSA (Venice Stakeholders Association) VSA Venice Skateboarders Association (donated graffiti removal stuff), and others. We also gave Dawna Chaet (Boston Dawna) money in support of what she did for the community, 3 separate checks of $100, 1.000$ and 1,500$ with copies of checks and emails provided upon request. Does this make us partners with Dawna Chaet, and any other of these entities, NO.
Also, to answer your comments on ME personally donating cameras to an OFW surveillance initiative (which I don't think exists) is something we were interested in after the fatal stabbing last April, WE (my husband and I, LAPD and other business owners at the meeting), discovered it would be easier if private owners of the establishments on OFW, to get the cameras up to curtail the violence in specific areas. So, whatever business wants to have cameras, that's up to them. The idea conceived by Heidi Roberts, "Lights Camera Action" which Captain Peters fully supported, got us interested in the whole concept in the first place. What a great idea! My husband and I are happy to be associated with or have allegiances with LAPD, and Venice311 and will continue to support any organizations that we believe in.

I googled the text you posted and shure enough that comment by Rob Kadota is on Venice 311. The LA Weekly might have a much bigger story on why the LAPD seems to be lying about their support of Venice 311.
If Thompson now removes the comment from her website because she reads the comments here, I would think that is deliberate obfuscation of a relationship between Venice 311 and the LAPD.

The reason why Alex Thompson is in a dark, dank apartment is probably because she does not appear to have basic business sense.
Any time or money invested in a any business that does not control the core element of the business is bad business 101.
Right now the LAPD uses an analog system that makes it so radio owners can listen in. The next system upgrade will make the police frequencies digital and destroy Alex's business model.
There would be too much liability for city agencies to partner with any type of blog outfit like Thompson envisions, let alone one with a convicted felon like Thompson at the helm snarking away all day long.
Thompson's franchise concept is laughable. 5 years of money and time can be literally destroyed by a system upgrade that Thompson has no control over.

I agree with most of what you said except you got the radio part wrong. The LAPD radios were dual-mode, analog/digital, but were used only in analog mode until June 18, 2001 when they switched everybody to digital. That's why the meddlers have to shell out $400-500 on their digital snitch snoopers. If it was still analog anyone could get a scanner for about $40 at radio shack.
Look at the Santa Monica Police Departments new system. Coparazzi like Venice 311 can't listen in.
Police Departments have it in their best interest to use tech to keep past or present criminals like Alex Thompson away from making any amount of money off of their communications.
The legality of what Thompson is doing is dubious at best. If ever there was a justification for secure communications, websites like Venice 311 would certainly justify the cost for most municipalities.
Law enforcement will justify finances for new systems to prevent drug dealers and such to shut out criminals and blogs like Thompson will be secondary shutouts.
I would assume a proliferation of websites like Venice311 will necessitate nationwide change in law, as there is too much damage that may be caused by rouge listeners using the information for nefarious intentions or profit.
All in all, it is a business model rife with cancerous problems from the get go.
And where is Bret Haller and YoVenice in all this? That so-called great community forum has been completely silent since the story broke. Haller is the one who launched Alex’s online Venice debut and helped fan the flames by promoting polarizing, anonymous online “community building” over the real thing.
I am glad he hasn't written anything about it. When she first started posting, many of her thoughts were interesting to read; but they became much nastier as time went on, and when she eventually started her website they were full-on attacks of Bret and other posters. I agree with "Guest" that keeping the "door closed" is refreshing.
I read YoVenice at least twice a day for the last 3 years.
The moderators and Bret had to ask Alex continually to stop posting and harassing so many individuals in Venice on YoVenice for months. I am happy Alex finally stopped posting and am happy Bret hasn't opened the door back up for her to try and come back to the site by posting about this story as she would use it as an excuse to harass everyone more.
YoVenice has been a great website since Alex Thompson stopped posting there and took all of her harassing of people to her own website.
"Community building?" More like community bullying. If it wasn't such a draw for button-holing Venice's most strident hate-mongers, it would be a complete waste of electrons.

I totally agree with Linniecanal88. And it sounds like that might be the only thing we would agree on. And that's what Venice has been about for years!
Alex/Amie has torn this neighborhood apart and driven a big wedge between the residents and the police. I never knew Boston Dawna personally and didn't want to. But she chased criminals to keep her neighborhood safe; she didn't fan the flames in order to build a franchise anti-crime blog. Residents need to get to know their neighbors and learn how to watch their neighborhoods, not passively rely on tweets from a girl with a batman complex in some dark, dank apartment with a scanner.
Maybe Boston Dawna's delivery isn't always polished, but she is and always has been an honest, law-abiding woman. She taught so many people in our wonderful neighborhood how to watch out for our homes and neighbors, how to come together and work as a TEAM. Alex/Amie/whatevertheheckhernameistoday has done nothing but divide our community, many times in VERY QUESTIONABLE WAYS. It is too bad that the LA Weekly article focused so much on a past between these two women, and on comparing the two of them now, because that is not the "clamor" that Alex is now promoting. She is a woman who intimidates and harasses her neighbors, blows situations way out of proportion. Todd, I am probably someone you would refer to as a "gentrifier" because I am anti RV and I want my neighborhood to be safe. But where Dawna brought people together to be responsible for themselves and to each other, Alex Thompson divides our community and in my opinion is destroying all of the good work so many residents have accomplished way before she ever started twittering!
OH, AND: If you are one of these people who believes these ridiculous lies and excuses Alex is giving for herself, do a couple of google searches OR call the courthouse yourself. I did, and guess what? She is lying. Surprise, surprise! It seems that all of her excuses stem from a former "truth," like her criminal allegations against her former business partner mentioned in the article. The judge actually found that SHE was the one who stole from HIM. Look it up and then make a few calls to confirm, it is easy. Now why on earth would she lie about these things? I can't believe the police would work with her, but then the LAPD has always surprised me by their stupidity and avarice. I have lived in Venice for 5 years, about 50 yards east of the drum circle. Ocean Front Walk, Speedway, walk streets, thefts, people out for fun, homeless, thugs, sunsets, art, and all that is Venice. It's good, and it's bad. But, there's clearly more good than bad.
When Venice311 came on my radar I found it an awesome source of what's really going on in the neighborhood. So, I can't understand why anyone would wish to tear down someone's desire to do something positive for the community. To relish in the bashing of someone to the extent that the LAWeekly article seems intent on doing, as well as the comments of others who seem to want to fan such flames of hatred, is beyond me.
I feel sad for the haters. One's life might bring more happiness if one were to spend one's energy on spreading some good.
Venice311 has a lot of fans. Pretty much anyone I have turned onto it has appreciated what it's about.

Actually, those bare-legged constables are part of the annual summer deployment that has been a staple of the community since long before the teapot tempest du jour rolled into Venice.
Just as a monkey with an iPad can write a great novel, even an apparent sociopath with a police scanner can do some good.
Venice has real graffiti busters. Why not call them? Venice has have real Neighborhood Watches. Why not get with them?
Without diving into the psychology of a drive to mix visible street clean-up with aggressive vigilantism (apparently against minor infractions), it's clear that balance needs to return to Venice.
That takes time, effort and honest discussion, not tweeting.
...and the residents (not Venice 311, as it didn't even exist yet) kept the additional 21 officers here year-round this year because of a lot of letters, emails, phone calls, and public appeals to our elected officials. That had nothing to do with Alex or her website.
