The Honeymoon Killers, librettist Leonard Kastle's sordid true love story about an aging Casanova on the run with his obese nurse/lover after a killing spree, screens at LACMA tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Fri., July 22

The weekend's must-see new movie is actually a sneak preview: Lars von Trier's masterful Melancholia — starring Kirsten Dunst as a female avatar for the controversial, bipolar Danish auteur — begins a one-week qualifying run this afternoon at the Laemmle Fallbrook. It's playing once a day at 1:10 p.m. through Thursday.

At LACMA, classic L.A. noirs In a Lonely Place (7:30 p.m.) and The Long Goodbye (9:15 p.m.) will screen back-to-back. If you haven't checked out the museum's Celebrating Classic Films series yet, now's the time.

Sat., July 23

Revisit Jack Nicholson at his seedy best as L.A. detective J.J. Gittes in Chinatown, tonight at the Aero at 7:30 p.m., followed by sequel The Two Jakes, which Nicholson directed. Screenwriter Robert Towne stops by to chat between screenings.

House of the Devil, Ti West's bloody homage to 1980s horror, is at the New Beverly tonight at 11:59 p.m.

Sun., July 24

Sundays are for playing catch-up: Terri moves from the Playhouse to the Monica 4-Plex tonight, or catch it at the Sunset 5. Also at the Monica, Michael Winterbottom's The Trip is holding fast to one screen. Check it out before it's gone.

Wed., July 27

Dreams That Money Can Buy, Dadaist filmmaker Hans Richter's 1947 surrealist collage, with dream sequences directed by Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder and Max Ernst, plays against a live score by Aska Matsumiya at the Silent Movie Theatre at 8 p.m.

Tree of Life leave you jonesing for more Malick? Days of Heaven (7:30 p.m.) and Badlands (9:25) are both at the New Beverly. —Sarah LaBrie and Karina Longworth
