The Last Dance Before Carmeggedon
Despite its name, American Ballet Theatre is no stranger to Russian ballet, having such classics as Don Quixote, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty as staples in its repertoire. For this visit, ABT eschews those Tsarist classics for the early days of Stalinist tractor and tundra art with The Bright Stream. Originally choreographed in 1935, the ballet was given a loving restoration by Alexi Ratmansky when he helmed the Bolshoi Ballet, and The Bright Stream delighted Southland audiences when the Bolshoi brought it here on tour a decade ago. The plot follows a troupe of ballet dancers visiting a collective farm and some switching of identities when a local husband tries to get frisky with the ballerina. Having been among the throngs surprised and delighted by the Bolshoi's performances of this resurrected gem, your scribe can only repeat this paper's mantra: Go!
