Swiss Cheese

1975 was a pretty crummy year. Along with the knife attack on Rembrandt's "The Night Watch," it also was a bad year for fuck dolls made of straw. Sennentuntschi, a horror film about the perils of discarding women, was the breakout Swiss (!) box office blockbuster of 2010 and occupies the same psychic space as that year's Finnish Santa Claus horror Rare Exports. A remote Alpine village is visited by a beautiful mute woman (Roxane Mesquida, who also played Sheila in last year's bat-shit-wonderful movie Rubber). She's hunted, despised, treated like a crucifix-hating animal by townsfolk. A local cop tries to find out her identity and, trudging up into the mountains from whence she apparently came, finds out that her secret origin holds within it horrors better left balled up and thrown under the bed until they are dry and crusty. Lust! Insanity! Murder! What's next — socks laughing at my premature ejaculation? Goethe-Institut Los Angeles, 5750 Wilshire Blvd., #100; Wed., July 6, 7 p.m.; $5. (323) 525-3388, goethe.de/ins/us/los/enindex.htm.
