Hooray for Culver City

It's a remarkable little stretch of street — the International Society of Krishna Consciousness with its buffet and discount copies of Forbidden Archeology, the incomparable Museum of Jurassic Technology and the adjacent Center for Land Use Interpretation, which trains its collective eye on land-ology — as it says, it's "dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge about how the nation's lands are apportioned, utilized and perceived." Improbable destinations — bus tours to, installations at and partnerships with — are CLUI mainstays, but the center itself hosts nifty exhibits. Previous in-house programs have included "The Nellis Range Complex: Landscape of Conjecture" and "Elevated Descent: The Helipads of Downtown Los Angeles." Currently, CLUI is examining its hood with Heart of Screenland: A Neighborhood Exhibition in Three Parts. Utilizing the official motto for Culver City, it includes video depictions, photographic displays and an "inexhaustive investigation of Urban Content" via touch screen. Available as a booklet, it beckons visitors onto a self-guided tour of the region that begins, conveniently, at CLUI HQ. Center for Land Use Interpretation, 9331 Venice Blvd., Culver City; open Fri.-Sun., noon-5 p.m.; runs indefinitely; free. (310) 839-5722, clui.org.
