First Nietzsche said God was dead, then music videos killed the radio star, and most recently Facebook annihilated real-life friendship. Now e-readers are murdering books and journals? Oh the horror, the horror! But don't count out the page like LeBron James in the fourth quarter. In Los Angeles, there are still those who gather in bookstores and sip on coffee while huddled around a podium to hear paper crinkling between the fingers of an author searching for a missing page. PEN Center USA and Michelle Meyering, the editor of Los Angeles literary journal The Rattling Wall, are resurrecting serious literature from the labyrinth of cyberspace and code encryption. On Wednesday, Lou Mathews, Libby Flores and Michelle Meyering — plus two surprise writers — will read their work from the journal at "The Rattling Wall Reading Event" at Book Soup. The journal includes work from distinguished poet and James Franco's poetry professor (yes, the star of Pineapple Expressis a poet apprentice) Tony Hoagland; A Million Little Pieces author James Frey (he who incurred the wrath of Oprah for distorting the truth); and images from Los Angeles artist Albert Reyes. Who are the two surprise readers? The details are guarded closer than Sarah Palin's actual knowledge of American history. Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd., W. Hlywd. (310) 659-3110, booksoup.com.
