Stories

In April, youth-skewing and notoriously finicky Pitchfork gave Quik's album a coveted spot on its "Best New Music" list, declaring: "Unencumbered by commercial expectations, Quik is making some of the most inventive music of his career."

Quik's self-described "blackout spells of creativity" have been frequent. He's seen a therapist who diagnosed him with post-traumatic stress disorder, and he has consciously drained those with negative energy from his life.

Yet even as he evolves into a wise Boddhisattva O.G., Quik hasn't lost his caustic wit or creative eccentricities. The death wish is gone, but the penchant for risk remains. And on any given day, he can still qualify as "America'z Most Complete Artist." The music is flowing so freely that he didn't even feel the need to write down rhymes on his last record.

"I'm not even really sampling anymore and I didn't need to write down lyrics because I feel like they slow me down. I'm always looking for new parts for my spaceship," Quik says, still racing. "An interviewer recently asked me if I was still doing this for the money. I never did this for the money. I did this because I love music and that's what I'm chosen to do." "At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh": DJ Quik

I second that..everyone is looking at this as if it's just his life..well what about the lives he has destroyed with this so called accidental killing of a child pedestrian. Everyone here is giving him credit and props but no one is feeling for the family lives that have been destroyed by his carelessness! Are you serious? Haunting him? What about us never getting to see my nephew graduate let alone marry the woman of his dreams..what about my nieces still feeling the pain of losing their only brother..what about my sister losing the only son she will ever have. Yeah I believe it haunts him but him bringing it up again(I don't care what LA Weekly asked from him) is like opening up a old wound. We try to get pass it but what person here can get pass losing a loved one! Let alone a child! Everyone in my family has been affected one way or the other as he continues to get praises and glories! But that's what our world has come too. No one said anything about about that in their comments..just that he is the dopest DJ! Well to me he will always be known as the man that took a special part of my family away!

For the record he has a cease and desist order and he's not to bring up my nephew's death in any way. And he wasn't just a pedestrian, he is a 5 yr child that has a name and if Quik would have been driving with sense, my nephew would be here today. All you guys did was open old wounds and now my sister is dealing with this all over again. Both of you should have some compassion for the other side. SAMFS

reguarding the part on the pedestrian child david blake aka dj quik ran over and killed without any remourse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like he was a dog! nothing happened to him cause he is in the lime light of rapping. the mother of this child got no justice and her life has ended! la weekly needs to here and write a article of the real truth about the innocent life taken at a young age.david blake never even said SORRY!!! in the mean while the mother of the child health never was the same due to how she was robbed from seeing her son grow up to be a man.her left side of the brain shut down, nervous brake down! and you mean to tell me all he can do his brag on this subject!! this is a touchy subject that never should have been mentioned.dj quik should have left this alone and since he didnt well now lets bring the truth of the story out and la weekly will be hearing from this family!!!

Yes, he is my nephew Jermaine, 5 yrs old. And it could have been an unavoidable accident if he would have been driving responsibly. And the messed up thing is that he never told my sister he was sorry.

Dj Quik is a living legend! His music has inspired me since I was a teenager and ever since I listen to Quik is the name. Till this day "Tonight" still gets my primer-ed up to go out. As an audio professional, a musician, and emcee I really appreciate his work and legacy. Great article and great story!
